Sierra Leone festival to celebrate the nation’s excellence

A fes­ti­val cel­e­brat­ing the art and cul­ture of Sier­ra Leone, and fundrais­ing for dis­as­ter relief efforts to the coun­try, will take place in Lon­don on Sat­ur­day, Octo­ber 14.

The Sier­ra Leone Arts & Cul­ture Mini-Fest will give vis­i­tors a glimpse into the poet­ry, music, film and his­to­ry of the African nation.

There will be speech­es and per­for­mances from Siana Ban­gu­ra, Kan­ja Sesay, Bar­bara Ntumy, Maria­ma Oni, Ejatu Shaw, Adama Jal­loh, Tali­whoah, Isat­ta Sher­iff, Show­ers Jal­loh and Asabi Hawah.

Pho­tog­ra­phy will be on dis­play from Sier­ra Leonean-British pho­tog­ra­phers Adama Jal­loh and Ejatu Shaw. Screen­ings of short films, Den­im, by Siana Ban­gu­ra, and 16 Years Lat­er by Abu Yil­lah will be shown. Vis­i­tors will also have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to be intro­duced to the Krio lan­guage by Mamusu Kallon, as well as enjoy food and arts and crafts.

Sier­ra Leonean film­mak­er and poet Abu Yil­lah will host the mini-festival.

The mini-fes­ti­val will take place on Sat­ur­day, Octo­ber 14, from 1pm, at Com­mon House, Beth­nal Green.

This is the final event in a series by The Salone Col­lec­tive to raise aware­ness and funds for vic­tims of nat­ur­al dis­as­ters in Sier­ra Leone.

Tick­ets for the mini-fes­ti­val are avail­able from £7 (£5 for unem­ployed or low wage). Some tick­ets will be avail­able on the day at £10.

For those look­ing to make a day of it, the Afrobeats for All fundrais­ing event will take place after the mini-fes­ti­val ends at The Albany, Dept­ford.
