Fifi Rong dances her doubts away in videos for ‘Love Yourself First’ and Ink Project’s ‘The End’
Multi-talented artist Fifi Rong has released an intimate, arresting visual for her latest single about self-love in this time of social distance and neglect.
‘Love Yourself First’ is a song made from haunting electronic clicks and gasping loops. Rong’s vocals glide through it with purpose in English and Chinese.
She sings, she produces, she dances. And just like Christine and the Queens, Rong’s relationship with her music and her videos is practically inseparable. In the ‘Love Yourself First’ video, she contemplates a love that “ended before it starts”, as close ups emphasise the intimacy she’s missing. But what starts out as a lonely scene steadily grows brighter, the colours changing from dark greens to luminous red and pink, as she lifts her arms about her in joyful patterns and sings aloft proudly.
The video was directed by 84.film. It is part of the campaign for Rong’s forthcoming album, There’s a Funeral in My Heart, For Every Man I Loved, which has so far been preceded by the singles ‘Love is a Lonely Thing’, ‘Distance’, and ‘Another Me’.
Away from her own projects, Fifi Rong has also collaborated with Ink Project, a production collective who’ve been experimenting with dub, soul and electronica.
She delivered vocals for Ink Project’s new song ‘The End’. You can watch Rong spinning her way through a collision of lava lamp-style filters and strobe effects in the recently released visuals below.
