Jams of the Week: Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Ghostpoet, Joy Crookes, and more
It’s been another mental week in the show we call “real life”. Let it not be said that artists are starved for ideas nowhere days, you know?
This week we’re excited to welcome back Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and Ghostpoet, and discover new singers Donalee and Joy Crookes. Onwards and upwards, peeps.
Don’t forget to check out our UK Fresh List on Spotify, updated weekly with new music by fledging artists we can’t get enough of, and returning stars.
‘Down on My Knees’ by Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, the Kentish Town siblings with a flair for old-school R&B, soul and rockabilly, are back. There’s oodles of Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Little Richard to their vigorous new single, which is perfect for chasing down your love at sunset.
‘Immigrant Boogie’ by Ghostpoet
Double Mercury Prize nominee, Ghostpoet, has returned with a deadly combo of foot-stomping basslines and drum beats in this topical take on the immigrant crisis. His sublime third album, Shedding Skin, re-wrote expectations for rock-led rap, so we’re can’t wait to hear more.
‘Roads’ by Westerman
Westerman is a singer-songwriter based in London making modest, yet magnetic, folk music. Think of Neil Young or John Martyn merged with the likes of C Duncan or Nick Mulvey. He recently signed to Blue Flower Music, who are also backing the ace hip hop group, Gotts Street Park.
‘Mental’ by Donalee
London-based Jamaican singer Donalee is showing big promise. Her remix of Angus and Julia Stone’s ‘Big Jet’ has plenty of pull, while her vocal detox on the aptly named ‘Mental’ (produced by Gappy Smooth) is equally as thrilling.
‘Bad Feeling’ by Joy Crookes
Eighteen-year-old Joy Crookes is new to us – and probably to you, too. But, on the strength of her music, she may soon be on the fast-track to stardom. Written by Crookes and produced by Tev’n (SBTRKT, Celeste, Lily Allen), ‘Bad Feeling’ is playful jazz-pop in the vein of Mark Ronson-era Amy Winehouse with a dose of Peggy Lee. The music video features fellow south London artist, Kojey Radical.
‘Blessed’ by Daniel Caesar
Last October, Toronto singer Daniel Caesar caught the attention of millions with his spellbinding song ‘Get You (feat. Kali Uchis)’. It now boosts over six million plays on SoundCloud alone. This week he released two gorgeous new tracks in ‘Blessed’ and ‘We Find Love’.
