Jams of the Week: Lion Babe, Kali Uchis, Milk Teeth, and more
The events of this week here in the UK have been profoundly difficult to stomach. One thing we should all take comfort in is the positivity of those working to unite people. Our crop of selections this week range from gospel to rap, funk to punk, and hopefully offer you more reasons to stay positive.
Don’t forget to check out our UK Fresh List on Spotify, updated weekly with new music by fledging artists we can’t get enough of, and returning stars.
‘Hit the Ceiling’ by Lion Babe
We’ve been fuelling up our spaceship in anticipation of more lit tunes from our favourite makers of 80s-inspired future funk. Lion Babe returned with this stylish new single just in time for BBQ season. Fire up the grill – and them rockets, too!
‘Hereditary’ by JID
JID is a young hip hop newcomer from Atlanta. Recently signed to J Cole’s Dreamville imprint, and pipped for greatness by Q‑Tip, the rapper’s already come through with a sizzling debut in The Never Story. Check his smooth flow on this bittersweet track.
‘Tyrant (feat. Jorja Smith)’ by Kali Uchis
Part Latin carnival, part dub psychedelia, Colombian-American singer Kali Uchis spars with a oppressive lover in her latest single, which features a commanding verse from UK singer Jorja Smith.
‘Count Your Blessings’ by The Como Mamas
This track is an energetic piece of gospel, from Ester Mae Wilbourn, Della Daniels and Angelia Taylor, collectively known as The Como Mamas. Signed to Daptone, these ladies recently released their third album, Move Upstairs.
‘Owning Your Okayness’ by Milk Teeth
Milk Teeth are a punk rock group from Stroud, Gloucestershire. Fronted by the vivacious Becky Blomfield, there’s an air of Wolf Alice, Ash and Avril Lavigne to their raucous energy. This track appears on the group’s forthcoming EP, Be Nice, which is out on Roadrunner Records on July 28.
