Jams of the Week: Mount Kimbie, Marika Hackman, Diggs Duke, and more
It’s about the ambient and the unusual this week, with new tunes from electronic duo Mount Kimbie, young maestros Marika Hackman and Digg Dukes, and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard. Dig in.
And don’t forget to check out our UK Fresh List on Spotify, updated weekly with new music by fledging artists we can’t get enough of, and returning stars.
‘Marilyn (feat. Micachu)’ by Mount Kimbie
Masters of ambience, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos, better known as Mount Kimbie, returned with this sublime track. Featuring vocals from the idiosyncratic Micachu, and a clutch of soft tones for those times when you need to pull back from the rat race, this is ace.
‘My Lover Cindy’ by Marika Hackman
The debut album from London singer and multi-instrumentalist Marika Hackman was a wild and original mixture of sounds and sensations. This new cut from her forthcoming second album, titled I’m Not Your Man, already feels like a dramatic and exciting evolution.
‘Starry Night’ by Lylo Gold
Lylo Gold’s rich timbre on this celestial slow jam – produced by Xvr Blck – is irresistible. Check out some of the London singer’s other tracks if this takes your fancy.
‘Home’ by Joe Goddard
A delectable slice of electronic tinted-vintage soul from the synth sound-mack who is member of Hot Chip and The 2 Bears. If you enjoyed Disclosure’s Moog for Love EP, this is one for you.
‘The Seedling’ by Diggs Duke
It’s cool to be different. And Diggs Duke is an artist at home with his art, which often defies conventional structures entirely. Taken from a new two-track single, ‘The Seedling’ is a synthesized loop, extracted and edited from a digitised piano roll of Eubie Blake’s ‘Love Will Find a Way’. Duke has adapted its lyrics from Paul Laurence Dunbar poems ‘The Seedling’ and ‘Fulfillment’. And finally, there’s pounding of live drums to close out this slice of raw-sounding ambient soul.
