New Waves 2018: Hana

Hana is shaping up to be a singer you don’t just want to listen to: you want to hang out with her. This South London songstress projects the beckoning cool of Aaliyah and Kali Uchis. She sings (‘Mr Jones’), she raps (‘West Coast Freestyle’) and she’s got a deft ability for delivering contemporary R&B songs that urge you to spin them over and over. At the time of publishing, her first single, ‘Be with U’, has attracted more than 270,000 streams across Spotify and SoundCloud.

There’s a sense of freedom, and just pure fun, that we really dig about Hana’s early music. She tells us she is currently wrapping up her debut EP, which will be a collection of songs written over the past three years.

“I’m working with a few different producers, all of which are my friends, so it’s been a really organic process,” she says. “I’m definitely going to be performing more live. Last year, I did a lot of acting, so that took up a lot of my time and focus. This year, I’d like to lean more on music as it’s been a long time coming now. I’m excited and nervous to play live, as it’s all my words in the open, but it will be sick to see if people vibe with it.”
