‘Bar$’ by Corina Corina
Who needs friends or bae when you’re getting that pay? Corina Corina sure doesn’t. This Brooklyn singer-songwriter shows tremendous chops for pop-funk with ‘Bar$’. Anybody who’s work unsociable hours will crack a smile at her verses: “Looking for that extra pay, Clocked in on Valentine’s Day… I’ll keep pouring whisky if you give me all your green”. Overtime crew, can we get an “amen”?
‘Nont for Sale’ by Sudan Archives
Multi-talented singer, producer and violinist Sudan Archives recently released ‘Nont for Sale’, an astral ode to her North East African roots. Sudan released her self-titled debut last year, on Stones Throw. Her mixture of earthly vocals and subtle electronic accompaniment brings Imani Coppola, Kelsey Lu, and TheeSatisfaction to mind. Her second EP, titled Sink, is due on May 25.
‘Nothing New’ by Charlotte Day Wilson
Soulful chanteuse Charlotte Day Wilson returned recently with a new EP, Stone Woman. ‘Nothing New’ offers more of the smoky, late-night musings that Wilson has captured so well on CDW EP and her work with BadBadNotGood.
‘All Night’ by Mishlawi
Not only is the hook on Mishlawi’s ‘All Night’ one of the finest hooks we’ve heard in years, I might just be the finest prelude to tragedy since the opening of Romeo and Juliet. Over its rhythmic Latin groove, It helps too that Tarik Mishlawi displays the cadence to go word-for-word with Drake or Lil Wayne. Got relationship trouble? We recommend a steady dose of Mishlawi’s urban sorrows to relieve your own.
‘Kofi Nomad’ by Jessica Lauren
The driving percussion on Jessica Lauren’s ‘Kofi Nomad’ is the perfect soundtrack to ease you into laser-focused concentration. As a keyboardist, she released a number of solo albums, as well as lending her skills to celebrated jazz acts, such as Jean Carne, Tom Browne, and Japan’s United Future Organisation. This hit of afrocentric excellence is a sample of her forthcoming LP, Almería (released on May 4, via Freestyle Records).
