Muva of Earth at The Hackney Social, London photos

Songstress Muva of Earth is a big presence. This south London alternative jazz singer and poet hosted a “cross-dimensional exhibition” at The Hackney Social last Thursday, entitled ‘stillness Roots within’.

Body art, African prints, beads, bracelets, bralets, and bold outfits of every description could be found at this event, which was part experimental art exhibition, part spiritual readings, and part discussion.

But there was music, too, from electronic musician Cil (aka Cecilia Morgan), DJ Jkarri, and Muva of Earth herself.

Muva of Earth performed a set of her jazzy and Afrofuturism-inspired songs that became gradually more hypnotic as the night went on. She cites Sun Ra, Björk and Feta Kuti as some of her biggest influences. Her songs ‘Affirmation’ and ‘Divine Ascension’ came to life with help from the saxophone, harp, and drums that accompanied her.

She was joined by fellow singer Angel Seka to perform a song in Yoruba. And she closed the evening with a spiritual reading.

Patience is a necessity at an event such as this, but those who enjoy the likes of Ibibio Sound Machine should keep Muva of Earth on their radar.
