New Waves 2018: Kiah Victoria
Don’t sleep on Kiah Victoria. This young singer-songwriter’s energy and singing ability is already next level. But then, throw in the fact her storytelling is equally strong and you have the makings of a real star.
Hailing from New York, Victoria has been honing her craft for the best part of a decade. Stirring, soulful and intimate pop is what this lady is about. If you’re familiar with Postmodern Jukebox, you might already have heard her featured on some songs. Just recently, she co-wrote Jessie Ware’s ace song ‘Midnight’. But it’s her own music that’s got us excited.
Victoria’s song ‘Hollow’ is a sublime example of modern pop music with something important to say about the world today. In it, she talks about coming to terms with her own identity, describes how seeing everyone around her fall apart from the pressures of this world scares her, but there “ain’t no use in living hollow”. From its concept to its chorus, this song is a triumph. And the rest of the songs on Victoria’s 2016 EP, Everybody, are equally as impressive.
When we saw her live at Afropunk London, she stunned us with her whole performance. All we know right now is she’s working on new material, but no word on when it might appear. Still, if you’re partial to Whitney Houston, Emeli Sandé, or Alicia Keys, you need to watch out for this rising star.
